LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -

Troup County football coach Charles Flowers was fired after just two seasons with the Tigers.

"The decision was made last week not to renew his employment agreement or assignment and it was made in the best interest of the Troup County School system," said Troup County Schools spokeswoman Tina Duckett.

The news broke to the team and community on Tuesday. Players and parents were up in arms over the dismissal.

"I was shocked I came to school, everybody started talking about it, I was about to cry," said junior linebacker Kyle Henderson.

"This isn't about football to me," said junior tackle Maurice Swain. "This man is a father figure in our life, some of us we don't have a father at home and these people keep saying they can't do anything about it they can't see where we're coming from. They see us as a player on the football field this is about more, he's family."

Two dozen parents reiterated Swain's sentiments, saying that Flower's firing is not good for the community as a whole.

"Since he's been at Troup we've had kids going to school, grades getting better, it's just crazy," said parent Tseyonka Davidson.

Parents and players peacefully gathered at the district offices Tuesday afternoon asking to speak to the Superindent.

"Everybody's voice should be heard," said parent Angela Boykin. "We should be able to have input on the decisions that they're making without letting parents know."

Parents allege that Flowers was fired due to a rumor in town that he paid to move a football player from Lanett to West Point in order to play for Troup. Davidson says the player in question is his cousin, and he was the one who arranged for him to transfer, not Flowers.

"Wherever they got it from that him paying a student is false," Davidson said. "I have statements, I have bank statements, I have witnesses. I have everything letting them know whoever is making these false statements against coach Flowers is false."

Duckett said the school district would not comment further on personnel matters, but listened to the group of upset parents and students.

Flowers would not comment per the advice of legal counsel.
