Columbus girls among those advancing in GHSA playoffs

Five area teams advanced on the first day of the GHSA state playoffs.

The 5th-ranked Taylor County girls and 6th rate Taylor County boys both won, but the other three teams to advance pulled surprises.

The Columbus Lady Blue Devils shocked No. 5 St. Pius X in the opening game of the Class AAA playoffs, 63-55.

In Class A, Mykeshia Darden had 37 points to lead Greenville past 3rd-ranked Calvary Day 66-64.

The Randolph-Clay boys advanced without taking the court. No. 7 Wilcox County had nine of their 12 players suspended for a non-basketball incident at school on Thursday, which led the school to forfeit their first-round game. It was the first time a team had a pre-game first round forfeit in the GHSA playoffs since 1941.
