Teachers get $50,000 to buy materials for the classroom

After a Columbus 7th grade geometry teacher spent her days repairing compasses and grouping students together to share the small amount of supplies they had, she got a big gift Monday.

Wendy Sands, is one of 50 teachers who will receive a portion of $50,000 for their classrooms. That's all thanks to a the program 50 For 50 School Gift. It's aim is to help falling school budgets by offering $50,000 for 50 schools in our area.

Sands, a 7th grade math teacher at Richards Middle School smiles ear to ear as she opens a box filled with tools, and learning materials to better teach her geometry class. "This is a godsend that they are able to have their own compasses to work with and that we have 3-dimensional figures where they can actually see geometry taking place."

The program is a partnership with DonorsChoose.org and The Community Foundation. Teachers apply for what project they need money for and local donors choose who they want to sponsor.

The donors pay half and The Community Foundation pays the other half.

"We have had materials we have had to share and it has not allowed as much as I wanted to hands on teaching geometry with these students and one of the standards is that we do construction tests with them," said Sands.

Sands says with education and funding dropping yearly, it's wonderful to have an organization that's stepping up to help teachers.

If you're a teacher and would like assistance you can post your project on  DonorsChoose.org with lists of what you need.
