(AP) - Alabama first lady Dianne Bentley has donated nearly 2,500 cell phones and accessories for a program that benefits the victims of domestic violence.

The phones were donated to HopeLine, a national program of Verizon Wireless, that recycles the equipment so it can be sold with the proceeds helping domestic violence victims.

The first lady collected the phones after challenging the governor's staff, cabinet and their employees to donate used cell phones.

The number of phones collected far exceeded the 500 that the first lady originally set as her goal.

Bentley said she hopes others across the state will also donate phones to HopeLine to help end the "cycle of violence."
