PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

One teenager is in jail and another is recovering in the hospital from a gunshot wound after Phenix City police say the man they were trying to rob fought back.

Samuel Howard, a 62 year old contractor, was working on two homes on 14th Avenue in Phenix City Wednesday when he tells police two young black men tried to rob him. Instead of handing over the money they wanted, Howard got into a fight with the 17 year old suspect and shot him in the arm.

"Two subjects attempted to rob Mr. Howard and they were fleeing and they gave a basic description of the vehicle they were leaving in. The call was dispatched and another officer observed the vehicle and stopped it," explained Captain Frank Ivey with the Phenix City Police Department.

Inside the car police found 18 year old Anthony Thomas, and his passenger, the 17 year old suspect who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the right arm. The teen was taken to the Medical Center for treatment and Thomas was taken to the Russell County Jail.

The victim in this case, Samuel Howard, was not injured during the robbery, and police say he will not be facing any charges.

News Leader 9 asked Capt. Ivey, "Do you think the man in this case made the right decision?" and he answered, "Considering the way it turned out, yes. There's a lot of factors involved there. First and foremost is that person's security as well as others in the immediate area and also whether or not the person is actually capable of aggressively attacking the attacker."

Anthony Thomas and the 17 year old are charged with robbery. The juvenile, who is still recovering in the hospital, will also be charged with possession of a stolen firearm for the gun he used during the crime.
