Officer cut by a man during a routine traffic stop, seeking suspect

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus Police officer is recovering after being cut by a man during a routine traffic stop early Saturday morning.

It happened on 24th Street and Oapes Avenue.

Investigators tell News Leader 9 that Columbus Police Officer Jason Swails was attempting to put handcuffs on 34 year-old John Garrett, Jr. when he was cut with a knife by Garrett and, and then the suspect fled the scene.

Officer Swails has been treated and released from the hospital.

Garrett is described as being 5'5", 135 to 140 lbs, brown eyes and black close cut hair. He should be considered armed and very dangerous. Anyone seeing him or having information on his location is asked to call (706)653-3400 or 911.
