COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Drivers may have noticed the slow moving traffic on Interstate-185 South on Saturday as several pounds of drugs and illegal drivers were taken off the streets.

Thousands travel I-185 South every day and Columbus police along with several other precincts and drug task forces brought traffic to a halt.

"What we got is we got a traffic control point," says Columbus Police Captain Gil Slouchik. "We're just kind of slowing cars down and bringing cars through our traffic control point."

They set up on I-185 South near the Williams Road exit. This is the second road block in about a decade and a very successful one at that. In one day, authorities arrested 53 people.

"We got close to 10 pounds of marijuana, about two or three ounces of crack cocaine, some ecstasy. Several individuals driving while their licenses were suspended, driving with no insurance so far it's been pretty fruitful," said Captain Slouchik.

Police say the road block is about drugs and stopping them from rolling into Columbus.

"We get a lot of drugs off the street. Last year we got about $26,000 worth of methamphetamine off the street; a quantity of marijuana, a quantity of crack cocaine. You know anytime we can stop drugs from coming into our city or we can get people driving with their license suspended off the streets, it's beneficial to our city," said Capt. Slouchik

He said one man had enough cocaine on him to be charged with trafficking.

"Don't bring drugs to Columbus and if you don't have a license don't drive," said Capt. Slouchik.
