Columbus police search for shooting suspect

An overnight shooting sent one Columbus man to the hospital and now police are on the lookout for the man who shot him.

Columbus police responded to a call after 11 o'clock Saturday night that a man appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers found the victim, but not the suspect.

The victim, 23-year-old Ni'al Hammons says he was walking down the sidewalk on 10th Street in Columbus. That's when he tells police a man shot him several times with a .38 caliber handgun.

Hammons was transported to the Medical Center, where he is now listed in stable condition. Police reports show the victim was shot twice in the torso and once in the hand. Police recovered three shell casings from the crime scene at 2214 10th Street.

After talking with witnesses and the victim police identified a suspect, 23-year-old Derrick Nutt. Nutt is described as a black man, 5'6", weighing 135 pounds. There is currently a warrant out for his arrest

"The suspect, Derrick Nutt, is currently facing two charges in relation to this crime: aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
