Heat could break records in Georgia, Alabama

Forecasters say near-record heat is expected in Alabama and Georgia as a heat wave continues across the South.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high temperature Thursday near 83 degrees in Atlanta. That would break Atlanta's record high for the date of 81 degrees. That record was set in 1946 and tied in 1973.

The NWS is forecasting a high temperature Thursday near 82 degrees in Birmingham. That would be just shy of Birmingham's record high for the date of 84 degrees.

Forecasters are predicting Thursday high temperatures of near 83 in Montgomery; near 81 in Huntsville; and near 80 in Mobile.

The weather service is predicting more heat for the weekend, with a high near 81 on Friday and near 83 on Saturday in Atlanta.
