Construction of Auburn's new elementary school is underway

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

It does not look like much now, but by fall of next year the gigantic field of dirt will be transformed into Auburn's newest elementary school.

Construction on the $11 million and 72,000 square foot school began last month. The building can hold up to 450 students, and with new students flooding Auburn every year making room without using portables is a priority.

"We have gained 1700 new students in the last five years we are now over 7,000 students for the first time," says Auburn City Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Jenkins.

Dr. Jenkins says a bigger high school is needed to absorb the growth and expects its future location will be announced during the April board meeting.

The building is slated to cost up to $75 million and the only way to fund it is to raise some sort of tax.

If funding is secured, there is no timetable set for construction to begin on the new high school.

At this time school leaders will focus on the Pick Elementary, which is named after the Pick family sold the property for purchase for the new school, and watch it grow over the next year and a half.

New school should be ready for students and teachers fall of next year.
