COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The person accused of fatally stabbing a Columbus man in his Lakebottom home on March 12 is claiming self defense.

Details of the murder were released in the suspect's Recorder's Court hearing on Friday.  The suspect, Mark Merritt, was not given a bond on his charge of murder by Senior Judge Michael Cielinski.  He is also charged with theft by taking, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

A Columbus detective said Merritt admitted to killing Michael Crowley, but says it was in self-defense.  Merritt said during a fight, Crowley came at him with a knife and he then grabbed the knife.  Detective Amanda Yates said Merritt did have cuts on his hand.  She also stated the Crowley was stabbed more than tem times from the neck to the knees.

Police found Crowley in the kitchen of his home covered with a blue fitted sheet after Cobb County authorities alerted Crowley's sister that his car was found partially burned.
