Former serviceman walking along road killed on US Highway 280

OPELIKA, AL (WXTX) -

A former Fort Benning serviceman was killed in an apparent hit and run accident this weekend.

Investigators working the case say John Simmons, 32, of Phenix City was killed when he was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning on US Highway 280 in Salem.

Troopers say Simmons was given a ride home from Auburn in the early morning hours when he apparently got into an argument with the car group.  That's when he got out of the car on US Highway 280 and began walking along the edge of the roadway.

Simmons was later struck by a vehicle between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a..m. His body was found by a passing motorist around 9:20 a.m. Sunday.

Simmons was attending Columbus State University and was originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Alabama State Troopers are asking the public's assistance in locating a vehicle that may have been involved in the collision.

Troopers are looking for a 2000-2004 GMC Yukon, with possible damage to the right front headlight area.

If you have any information that can help deputies and troopers, please call the Lee County Coroner's office at 334-737-3620 or the Alabama State Troopers at 334-745-4651.
