Columbus jobless rate drops to 8.9%

New numbers show Columbus's unemployment rate dropped to 8.9% in February, slightly down from the previous month.

It's an even bigger improvement than in February of 2011, when the rate was at 9.7%.

Meanwhile, Georgia's February seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined for the seventh consecutive month to 9.1%, the lowest rate since March of 2009, when it was also 9.1%.

The Department of Labor says fewer layoffs are partly responsible.
