COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A 16-year-old girl is dead after her boyfriend claims he shot her by accident. Columbus police are investigating the city's 8th murder of the year. The victim is Hardaway High School student Kayla Castro.

According to reports, Castro was at her boyfriend's house on Wellborn Drive Saturday night. The boyfriend, 18-year-old Benjamin Brantley, tells police he was walking back to his bedroom with a sawed off shotgun a family member had just returned to him when the gun went off.

The 12-gauge shotgun struck Kayla Castro once in the chest, killing her.

Police say initially Brantley ran from the home, but later returned to the scene and turned himself in to police. He was taken to the Muscogee County Jail, charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a sawed off shotgun.

Brantley is scheduled to appear in Recorder's Court Tuesday morning.
