A Tyler man was killed in a multi-vehicle collision on I-20 eastbound past Highway 42 in Gregg County, Monday morning.

According to the DPS fatality report, traffic was starting to slow in the area because of a minor wreck involving an 18-wheeler and a salt water tanker truck off on the side of I-20, when a 2003 Le Sabre rear-ended a pick up truck in front of it, side swiping an ambulance unit on the scene of the first wreck. An Avalanche traveling at a high rate of speed then struck the Le Sabre, while at the same time an 18-wheeler slammed into the Avalanche.

The driver of the Le Sabre, 29-year-old Michael Lee Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Avalanche was transported to a Longview hospital in critical condition.

It took several hours for crews to clean the scene of the wreck. I-20 eastbound was shut down until around noon Monday.
