Shooting at Sam Harris Park, victim airlifted to Columbus


Auburn police are investigating an assault that happened Sunday evening around 5:25 p.m. at Sam Harris Park, located on Foster Street. 

It happened inside the park, while families were trying to enjoy their Sunday afternoon by cooking out and playing on the play ground.

Officers responded and found Jim Porter laying in the wooded area across the street from the park suffering from a gunshot. He was airlifted to Columbus Regional for a gunshot wound to the hip. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening. 

The suspect, a 39-year-old Auburn man, is known by the victim but police are not releasing his name at this time.  Police tell us they are searching for the him.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson said, "We are going to increase our patrols of the next few weeks and make sure we don't have any more of that type of behavior."
