Clergy group to air ad against Ala immigration law

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - A group of clergy leaders is airing a TV commercial that speaks out against Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigration.

The commercial will air in Montgomery starting Tuesday. It urges legislators to fix the law, which participants say has hurt the state's economy, bred a climate of fear and divided families.

Participants include Baptist, Methodist, independent Christian and Jewish leaders. They planned a news conference for Tuesday in Montgomery to discuss the advertisement.

The ground behind the commercial is called Faith Leaders for Welcoming Alabama. It's described as a coalition of almost two dozen clergy leaders from across the state.

Leaders in the faith community were among the first in the state to publicly oppose the law after Gov. Robert Bentley signed it into law last year.
