The 18-year-old accused of killing his girlfriend with a shotgun over the weekend in Columbus appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.  Benjamin Brantley, claims the shooting was an accident, but investigators are saying otherwise.

Brantley allegedly told police he was fiddling with a sawed-off shotgun Saturday night when it accidentally went off and shot his 16-year-old girlfriend Kayla Castro in the chest.

Detectives testified in court there is no way the gun went off by mistake.

Investigators add, Brantley initially told them he dropped the shotgun, causing it to discharge, but later changed his story and said he was holding the gun when it fired.

The judge issued no bond for the felony murder charge.

After court, Benjamin Brantley's mother ran out of court screaming, "They won't let my baby go!" Family members wearing t-shirts that read "Free Benny" and "Rest In Peace Kayla" came to comfort her.

Benjamin Brantley will be held in the Muscogee County Jail on the charges of murder, possession of a sawed off shotgun and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His case is bound over to Superior Court.
