Family mourns soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Phenix City family is mourning the loss of their cousin who died during combat in Afghanistan last Thursday.

Lauren and Charles Neal have known 20-year-old Jonathan Davis since he was five years old. "It's one of the things that you hear on television but when it touches you, it's different," said Charles.

Davis was shot and killed during combat in Afghanistan last Thursday.

The Neals say Davis was born in the Columbus area, but his family later moved to Atlanta and then settled in Griffin. They say Davis always had ambitions to fight on the front lines and defend his country.

"He was always rambunctious in to doing something to make you laugh and he was one fine guy," said Charles.

A fine guy who, the Neals say, met and married his high school sweetheart Kristen. After Davis joined the Army, a little over a year ago, Kristen became pregnant.  She's now 8 months along and expecting a baby boy sometime next month. She plans to name the baby Benjamin Jonathan Davis, in honor of a father who would never have the chance to meet his son.

"I just know he was fighting for our country and that he was a Christian. I know he is already in heaven with God," said Lauren Neal.

Davis was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The Neals say his church in Griffin is planning a special Easter Service this Sunday to honor the fallen hero.
