Church gives away free gas to help ease the pain at the pump

A local church is trying to help ease the pain at the pump by giving away free gas! With gas prices reaching almost $4.00 here in Columbus, people are lining up around the corner to get it for the best price yet, free.

"Basically times are hard. I have a newborn child at home, free gas and it's for a good cause," participant Tania Davison said.

Tania Davison says this could not have come at a better time. Now she can run her errands without worrying too much about her tank. For two hours, New Destiny Church put gas in the cars of anyone willing to wait in line.

"It went by really smoothly. I was in line for maybe five minutes," said Davison.

"Our church is doing this outreach to show the community that someone still cares. We've come to realize that people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. So, it was our purpose to just to give the people of Columbus some relief at the pump," said Denitrify Hartnett.

The price of gas has been steadily increasing and is projected to continue the spike, hitting record highs this summer. Julie Duncan with New Destiny Church says this is the best idea because it helps a lot of people.

"We wanted to do something that nobody else in the community is doing that will cause a big impact on their bottom dollar," said Duncan.

The church spent over $2,000 putting gas in cars. All the money came from donations from the congregation.

"I know there are people out here who are not as fortunate as I am, and they need the relief at the pump.  We're just happy to be able to provide that need," said Hartnett.

They've helped about 500 people Saturday, giving each car between $15.00 and $20.00 worth of gas.
