FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

At least 50 teams from around the world are competing this year in the 2012 Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning.  The ultimate-challenge is a 60-hour event.

Two-man Ranger teams will be tested in various obstacles that require physical strength and ranger skills.  A team of two brothers, Major Tim Keirsey and Captain Kent Keirsey are taking part in this year's competition, vying for the title of Best Ranger.  "Since January, we've been training everyday… [doing] body movements [and] the long workouts together."

The competition allows little time for rest and meals. Both team members are required to complete each task and over the course of 3 days each Ranger will have completed 60 miles. Obstacles include weapons firing, extended road marches, land navigation, parachute jumps and many others.

The participants are all graduates of the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning. The competition was originally established in 1982 and has been compared to the Ironman and Eco-Challenge competitions.

The first event will start at 6:00 a.m. on April 13.  A formal awards ceremony will be held on April 16.

Schedule of events:
Friday, April 13 - Fast rope insertion/extraction system and urban obstacle course
Saturday, April 14 - Day Stakes
Sunday, April 15 - Helocast and Water Confidence Test
Sunday, April 15 - the Leader Challenge and final buddy run to the finish line
Monday, April 16 - Award ceremony

Of the 50 teams who competed in 2011, only 31 teams finished. For information on last year's competition, visit the 2011 Best Ranger Competition's website.
