Talbot County Deputy sentenced to prison time for extortion

A former Talbot County law enforcement officer will spend 33 months in prison for "abusing his power."

Charlie Stephens was sentenced by Federal Court Judge Clay Land to nearly 3 years in prison after pleading guilty to extortion charges in December 2011.

Stephens was arrested summer 2011 along with two other Talbot County law enforcement officers - Jeff Sivell and Alvin Malone.

The charges came after a 2009 drug trafficking investigation revealed the trio was allegedly abusing power.

The investigation was conducted by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Stephens took two bribes from a drug dealer who told him he was transporting cash through the county for a drug deal.   The dealer was working with the FBI as an informant and video taped the interactions.

He was also ordered to pay restitution of $4,400 to the FBI.
