Central clinches Area 7 baseball title

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WTVM) - Paul Waldrop and Cody Hughes homered, and Jordan Brown tossed a four-hit shutout as Central beat Smiths Station 4-0 to clinch the 6A-Area 7 baseball title on Tuesday night at Darnell Field.

Brown struck out ten Panthers while walking only one in earning the victory. No Smiths Station runner reached third base.

Waldrop's solo homer in the second inning was all the scoring the Red Devils could muster off of Kyle Drury until Drury showed signs of tiring in the sixth inning.

Hughes led off the sixth with a homer to center field. Adam Jones drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Matt Evenson added an RBI single to cap the three-run inning.

The series wraps up on Friday night at Smiths Station. The Panthers need to win the opening game of the doubleheader to clinch the area runner-up playoff spot. They can also make the playoffs if Auburn loses at Opelika.
