"Nighthawks" patrolling for DUI's in Columbus

Georgia State Patrol is bringing a new DUI task force to the Columbus area.

The group known as the Nighthawks has already been a success in the Atlanta and Savannah areas.

A task force of six troopers will work with the Sheriff's office, Marshall's office, and Columbus police to hunt down those driving under the influence.

Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, has seen firsthand how well these units work.

"These troopers typically do not do not respond to traffic accidents. They might stop someone who is speeding at an excessive rate, they might catch someone for other offenses, but their focus is dui, looking for impaired drivers," said Blackwood.

The Nighthawks were first formed in 2004.

The name comes from the peak hours of DUI related incidents, typically in the early hours of the morning.
