Suspects arrested in Opelika credit union robbery

Two men have been arrested after police say they robbed an east Alabama credit union Friday afternoon in Opelika.

Police responded to a bank alarm at East Alabama Community Federal Credit Union on East Thomason Circle around 2:40 pm.

Officers say Tanearus Collins, 23, and Dontaveus Collins, 20, entered the credit union with handguns and ordered the tellers to get on the floor. The suspects then jumped the counter and took an undetermined amount of money from the teller drawers.

A short time later, Lee County Sheriff's Deputies stopped the suspect's vehicle on Marvyn Parkway near Interstate 85 for a traffic violation.

While one of the suspects was detained the second suspect jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot but was taken into custody after a short foot chase.

Both men have been charged with robbery first degree.

The FBI has been called in to help with the ongoing investigation.
