Three area teams advance in AHSAA baseball playoffs

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WTVM) - The Central Red Devils took advantage of three big innings to complete a sweep of Benjamin Russell, 9-2 and 7-2, in the opening round of the AHSAA Class 6A baseball playoffs on Friday night at Darnell Field.

In the opener, Central scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second, then held on for the win.

As for the nightcap, they snapped a 2-2 tie with a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.

The Devils advance to the second round, where they will play host to Prattville next weekend. Prattville ended Smiths Station's season, sweeping the Panthers 7-0 and 9-3.

As for other area teams, Russell County beat Rehobeth 8-0 and 9-1 to advance in Class 5A. The Warriors will play at Charles Henderson in the second round.

In 4A, Beauregard swept Dallas County 8-2 and 10-4. Next up for the Hornets is Bibb County.
