1Q comparison: Aflac doubles profits

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus-based Aflac, the largest provider of supplemental health insurance, says it's first quarter profits doubled.  It's net income increased to $785 million from less than $4 million a year earlier.

The company expects this year's sales in Japan to increase by at least 10 percent.

When commenting on the company's 1Q report, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Daniel P. Amos said: " When discussing our fourth quarter 2011 results, we stated our objective was to improve our diversification and credit profile by further reducing our exposure to European investments. We have made significant progress executing that plan."

Aflac's investment losses this 1Q only amounted to $29 million, that's compared to nearly $400 million a year ago.

Recently, Aflac came in at #77 on Fortune's 2012 list of best companies for workers.
