Eufaula native Upshaw fifth Tide player take in NFL Draft

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - The Baltimore Ravens have selected Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw with the 35th overall pick in the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-2, 272-pound Upshaw could fill the void left by the departure of free agent outside linebacker Jarret Johnson

Upshaw, a native of Eufaula, Ala., is the first player taken by Baltimore in the draft. Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome didn't make a selection in the first round, choosing instead to deal the 29th overall pick to the Minnesota Vikings for the 35th pick and a fourth-rounder.

Newsome said Thursday night that there were enough good players left to make it worth moving back six notches to get an extra pick in the draft.

Upshaw was the fifth Crimson Tide player taken in the draft this season. Four others were taken on Thursday in the first round.
