COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The suspect in a year and a half old murder case in Columbus has now been charged.

Brokeel Ransom, a mentally handicapped 19-year-old, appeared in Recorder's Court Tuesday morning, charged in the 2010 murder of his caretaker.

News Leader 9 had the only reporter in court to hear the details of the case.

A year and a half ago 69-year-old Julius Rogers and his wife were acting as care-givers for a mentally handicapped man named Brokeel Ransom. Then an incident that took place at the family's store, Rogers Grocery, that resulted in Rogers' murder.

In court police said Rogers had taken Ransom to his grocery store on Steam Mill Road in November 2010. At that time Ransom became agitated about something and stabbed Rogers in the torso with a kitchen knife, right below the rib cage.

Rogers was treated at the hospital and doctors expected him to make a full recovery, but he died from his injury a few months later in February 2011.

Ransom was not previously charged in the case because of his mental disability. It was revealed in court that Ransom is autistic, mentally handicapped, and his caretakers say he has the mental capacity of a three or four year old.

He was ordered to under-go a mental evaluation and to be held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail. We're told he will likely be transferred to a mental care facility until his case is heard in Superior Court.
