(WTVM) -

Governor Nathan Deal signed into law legislation that would give additionaloptions for Georgia's students.  Thebill, HB 797,creates a state level approval process for charter schools whenever communitiesrequest them.

"Georgia's parents want moreoptions, and it is my duty as governor to see that they have them. Theseschools help students trapped in underperforming schools and aid communitiesthat want to invest in new and imaginative ways of learning for their children,"said Deal.

The house bill also sets a new funding protocol and establishes a State CharterSchools Commission to conduct the review process for charter schools. Undercurrent law, charter schools are required to operate at half the funds ofpublic schools.

"By observing high-performing charter schools throughout Georgia,it's clear these institutions promote competition, innovation and creativitywhile encouraging strong parental involvement," said Deal. "We must empowercitizens with public school options and true local flexibility if we want toimprove student achievement."

The bill was signed at Cherokee Charter Academy in Canton, GA.
