Special School Board meeting called for Superintendent Search

Superintendent Susan Andrews will no longer be the head of Muscogee County Schools after July 31. The announcement came two months ago at a school board meeting.

On Saturday, board members called a special meeting to interview possible recruiters for the next person to head the school district of more than 30,000 students.

"This sets the standard for the district moving forward and it is very important that we be very deliberate about it and very intentional about not only who we hire, but who we hire to help us find that right person," says school board chair Cathy Williams.

Two companies made presentations to the board Saturday morning, a third presented by teleconference from Pennsylvania.

Board Member John Wells has gone through a number of superintendent searches in his 26 year school board career.

"We are looking for the same qualified person who can come in and understand our district, get a hold of it, work with the board members, work with the community, and relate good communication skills," Wells said.

He says an outside firm would have the resources to make the process of selecting a new superintendent quicker.

"We will get a lot of names then whittle down the selection to five or six, however many the board wants to interview, they will send us the best candidates we will interview from there then select the superintendent," Wells said.

Williams says they hope to have a superintendent chosen by the fall of this year.
