MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - According to a new study by the Meals on Wheels Research Foundation, Alabama ranked sixth in the nation for seniors dealing with the threat of hunger.

Nationally, one out of every seven seniors faced the threat of hunger in 2010. Those at a greater risk were seniors living in the South and Southwest, minorities and those with lower incomes.

Senior service organizations in Montgomery feed at least 500 seniors daily, delivering several dozen meals. The issue got the attention of Governor Bentley who has charged the State Department of Senior Services commissioner Neal Morrison to address the issue. Morrison said they may have to cut some of their programs.

"We are trying to shrink government here in Montgomery to help our most needy population in the state." said Morrison.

Morrison said seniors are the fastest growing age group in the state and that his department is downsizing to save about $400,000 that will now go directly towards the Meals on Wheels program.
