New Auburn exit will not be ready for football traffic

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Construction delays have stalled the opening of Auburn's new interchange at Exit 50. The project began last summer and was supposed to be completed by the time Auburn University fans rolled into town for the football season.

However, it will take another seven months before Auburn Technology Parkway is completed.

"It was supposed to be open this summer but they have had some delays. They asked for an extension and it has been approved.  Now, they are hoping it will be done by December," explained Auburn City Manager, Jeff Ramsey.

The City Engineer says the new interchange will be well worth the wait. The delay won't add to the $11 million price tag paid for by the Department of Transportation.  Ramsey says businesses in Auburn's tech parks will have better access to the Interstate 85 corridor, and traffic will be eased at other exits.

Ramsey is also excited about another major project on the interstate, believing it could save lives. The project involves installing metal cables up and down the medians.

"There is a lot going on out there. They are also putting up the cable system to prevent people from crossing the median and getting into head on collisions. This can save lives. So, it's busy so for drivers out there. If you can avoid the area, that's the best thing to do.  If not slow down and watch out for workers," he said.

The cable wires are being strung from one end of Lee County to the other. Ramsey says eventually it's the DOT's desire to cover the entire interstate.
