SMITHS STATION, AL (WXTX) - Some east Alabama residents could be in danger of losing some of their volunteer fire departments.
Volunteer fire fighters in Lee County are saying this could happen if voters do not approve the renewal and increase of the county's fire fee at a special vote next Tuesday, May 29.
If the vote is successful, the fee will increase from $25 to $50.
Thursday, firefighters and citizens came out for a community meeting at the Smiths Station Fire and Rescue. The goal was to inform the public about the fee and its importance for funding volunteer stations.
Officials with the fire department say this increase would allow volunteer fire stations to remain open and continue responding to emergencies.
The fee was approved for 25 years in 1989 and is set to expire in October of 2013.
