Football playoff hot topic as SEC Meetings get underway

Posted: Updated:

DESTIN, Fla. (AP) - The Southeastern Conference is looking out for No. 1.

Maybe even No. 2.

Football coaches from the powerhouse and recently expanded league were in unison Tuesday that they want a proposed four-team playoff to include the best teams in the country - and not be tied to conference champions.

Their solidarity comes as no surprise considering the league has won six consecutive Bowl Championship Series national titles, with the latest one coming when Alabama knocked off LSU after not winning its division or even reaching the league championship game.

Florida coach Will Muschamp summed up the SEC's stance by saying, "In our league, we might have four of the best teams in the country."

Alabama's Nick Saban was even more blunt when discussing the demand by some conferences that all four teams be conference champions.

"The fans and the people who are interested in college football are interested in seeing the best four teams play in a playoff," said Saban. "All right, so now we're going to mess that up by saying you've got to be a conference champion. I think somebody's a little bit self-absorbed and worrying about how it affects them, and they can best get somebody in the game all the time, rather than get the best four teams."
