World's Widest Yard Sale starts in Phenix City

The World's Widest Yard Sale is kicking off first thing Thursday morning, and the starting point is bringing statewide attention to some nearby east Alabama communities.

"I wanted to raise money for my daughter. She's very active, and I wanted to raise money for her summer activities and her fall activities as well," said Julie Dunbar, one of the vendors for the event.

Dunbar is joining possibly 50 vendors and businesses that will line Highway 80 West in Russell County for the World's Widest Yard Sale selling anything from bags like Dunbar to crafts to typical yard sale fair.

Phenix City is the starting point for the statewide event that boasts a string of yard sales across Alabama.

"Phenix Plaza will be the first vendor site. And, then you will have another one at the intersection of  Highway 80 and 280 in what used to be the Grant Shopping Center. Piggly Wiggly at Ladonia Plaza will also have some people set up there I believe, and East Alabama Motor Speedway," said Kelli Roberts with the Russell County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Roberts says Phenix City has the lowest tourism numbers in Alabama, but she says the statewide yard sale will bring more attention to our area.

"This really puts us in a good position to get more people coming and staying in Phenix City and to see what Phenix City has to offer, and all that is coming up with the river and development."

Dunbar also says it is a great thing for the locals too.

"In our community, we need to do more community activities and get other people involved and I think it is going to be great for our community to get out and have something to do on a weekend and bring the family out and just have a great outing."

The yard sale starts Thursday morning and runs through Saturday.  Each day vendors will open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. EST.
