NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (WTVM) -

Alabama spelling champion 13-year-old Kevin Lazenby made it to round five of the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals. He incorrectly spelled "hortulan," which means belonging to a garden, and was the first one out in the round.

Lazenby, of Opelika, was the first speller Thursday morning. He correctly and confidently spelled "cephalalgia" in the fourth round.  Cephalalgia, pronounced (sef-ul-lal-juh), is a technical term for headache or pain in the head.

The Opelika Middle School student is one of 278 participants who won local and regional spelling bees across the nation, but after the first three rounds Tuesday and Wednesday, 228 spellers were eliminated.

This was Lazenby's second year at the national spelling bee. Since he's from Alabama he had the alphabetical honor of being the first speller.

The spelling bee is airing live on ESPN2. You can watch the final rounds Thursday night on ESPN.
