MONTGOMERY (AP) - Former Alabama quarterback and NFL and SEC football official Bobby Skelton of Montgomery died Sunday, University of Alabama officials said. He was 74.

Skelton was a quarterback for Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant during his early days as coach of the Crimson Tide. He played in Bryant's first bowl game at Alabama, the 1959 Liberty Bowl. He also played in the 1960 Bluebonnet Bowl and was most valuable player in the 1960 North/South All Star Shrine Game.

He later worked as both a Southeastern Conference football official and as a NFL official. He officiated in the 1989 Super Bowl game.

Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore was a teammate of Skelton at Alabama. He said Skelton was called "Bullet Bob" because of the way he could throw the football.
