FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -
The National Infantry Museum unveiled a new exhibit on Thursday to honor the Olympic success of the Fort Benning-based Army Marksmanship Unit.
The display includes items won, used and worn at past Olympic Games by members of USAMU, including medals, uniforms, guns and an Olympic torch.
Attending the ceremony were Glenn Eller and Vincent Hancock, who won gold medals at the 2008 games and have already earned the right to defend their medals at the upcoming Games in London. Also there were the other AMU shooters who have earned Team USA berths.
1960 Olympian Laurence "Red" Mosely, who shot rapid fire pistol at the Rome Summer Games, and 2012 Olympian Michael McPhail, who will shoot prone rifle in London, had the honors of unveiling the exhibit.
"I'm really so proud to be with these individuals that made this Olympic team because I know how hard it is to be part of that team," Mosely said. "I'm just awed by how well they've done and how well they shoot."
Hancock said he likes how the exhibit puts things in perspective.
"I liked going back and seeing all the medals from 1964 to 2008, and the tradition that the Army Marksmanship Unit brings to the Olympic history," said Hancock. "it's about experiencing the camaraderie that all the soldiers have, the past present and future soldiers. It's a great feeling knowing you're part of that brotherhood."
The exhibit will remain open to the public for a year. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London will get underway in late July.
