Discussion: "Proud to be an American" or Justin Bieber's "Baby"

BROOKLYN, NY (WTVM) - A popular, patriotic tune has been banned from a Kindergarten graduation at a New York City school, sparking controversy.

"Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood will not be sung during the moving-up ceremony at the Edna Cohen school in Brooklyn.

The school's principal, Greta Hawkins, reportedly thought the song might offend students from other cultures and now many students and their parents are not pleased.

"Proud to Be an American" is a patriotic song that everybody should be happy and proud to sing.  A lot of other cultures are here because they want to live freely and that should be a song that everybody should be able to sing with no problem," said mom Luz Lozada.

The New York City Department of Education says the issue is that the song is not age-appropriate.

The department says it includes lyrics that talk about what would happen if all things were gone tomorrow.

Instead, the children will sing "You've got a Friend" and the Justin Bieber song, "Baby."

We want to know what you think about this story. We're asking which song do you think is more appropriate to play at a kindergarten graduation -- "Proud to be an American" or Justin Bieber's hit song "Baby"?
