Severe weather causes damage, power outages across Central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A strong storm system moved over Alabama on Monday night, causing damage and power outages for many in the area.

There were several reports of a funnel cloud in Winston County. FOX6 Chief Meteorologist J.P. Dice confirmed a tornado did touch down here. A lot of trees were also reported down in that area.

There were many reports of damage in Bessemer last night. Windows were broken out of a local furniture store building and winds took off the secondary roof to Bessemer's utilities building. The primary roof is still intact and there were no leaks inside the building. Along Bessemer's 1st Avenue, 15th and 16th streets are closed to allow the damaged roof to be removed.

The Shelby County Airport also suffered some damage from the strong winds. An airplane was flipped upside down and parts of the hanger were damaged. There were no reports of any injures.

In Birmingham, a tree fell onto a house and four cars in the 100 block of Greensprings Avenue. No injures were reported at that location.

Weather officials say some of the strongest winds reached more than 60 miles per hour.

The powerful storms downed trees and left thousands of people without power on Tuesday morning. Alabama Power has worked through the night to restore electricity to homes and businesses.

As of 2 p.m. around 16,700 power outages remain in Birmingham and another 6,600 in the western part of the state.
