HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities confirmed a person claiming to be Auburn shooting suspect Desmonte Leonard sent out a dozen tweets during Monday's standoff. But officials believe the account was fake.

The account, DesLeonard, sent several tweets as Montgomery Police, U.S. Marshals, and the FBI searched a Montgomery home for the Auburn murders suspect late Monday.

"Rumors were rampant last night about tweets inside the attic and all types of things," said Alabama Department of Public Safety director Col. J. Christopher Murphy. "We've got to run all of those down because you can't just say 'oh I don't believe that.' We have to spent man power to do that."

Huntsville attorney Mark McDaniel believes the person that created the account could fall on the wrong side of the law. According to McDaniel, Alabama's hindering prosecution statue is very vague. Police spent time looking into the tweets, and therefore, the person responsible for them could face a class C felony.

"This is not a joke to the Auburn district attorney, this is not a joke for law enforcement, this is not a joke to those families that are going to be burying their loved ones," said McDaniel.

The account was deleted Monday morning.
