AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -
The accused Auburn shooter, 22-year-old Desmonte Leonard is scheduled for his first court appearance on Thursday morning, according to Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson.
Dawson told WSFA 12 News reporter Brian Henry that Leonard's arraignment will likely be set for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Lee County Justice Center. Leonard is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility - no word on if he will be transferred to the Lee County Jail after his hearing or if he will remain in Montgomery.
"Leonard will be under very tight security," explained Dawson. Special concessions have been made with regards to Leonard's transport and time in jail to keep him safe from the general population.
"He was very cooperative when he turned himself in," added Dawson. "Very cooperative and he actually offered an apology for what he did. He told investigators he was sorry."
Dawson said he does not consider this apology a confession in any way.
Leonard turned himself in to the U.S. Marshals at the Montgomery Federal Courthouse with the assistance of Montgomery Attorney Susan James on Tuesday night. Leonard has been charged with three counts of capital murder and two counts of assault in the first-degree for his alleged role in a shooting that killed three men and wounded three others at an Auburn apartment complex over the weekend.
