COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Carver High School Senior Rodney Giles has waited since his freshman year to hear that sound in the brand new Carver High School.  Soon, Giles and hundreds of other students will leave Baker Middle School and call the new 240,000 square foot high school home.

Three years ago, Giles was spending his first year at the old Carver High School. The building was demolished in the fall of 2010 and work began on a new Carver High School. Now, he is excited to be one of the first graduating classes.

The project has a price tag that exceeds $30 million. The new school is equipped with a massive cafeteria and a capacity to fit nearly 1,500 students.

Muscogee County School district spokeswoman Valerie Fuller said, "It is totally different than the school you saw previously. I think when the public is able to come in and see what their tax dollars actually paid for they will be proud."

When the building is turned over to Muscogee County School District, students at Baker Middle school will get their school back and no longer be housed at Marshall Middle School.

"We are in the final phases. We are finishing up the site work, punch list of items, and finishing up the gym on the inside," Project manager James McGill said.

The transition will take some time to get used to it.  Giles is excited to be back at his school and excited to be the first class to graduate.
