Glory Girls jump rope team prepare for Junior Olympics

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

For nearly 10 years the Glory Girls have been training hard and competing at the national level at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

"The program director had an idea of starting an actual competitive jump rope team.  I tried out and I made it, and I've been doing it ever since," said 17-year-old Geniquiya Meridith.

Meridith was a member of the very first team. Since then she traded her jump rope for a coaching hat and now helps whip the young Glory Girl team into shape.

"It's fun because we get to express ourselves with our routines," Meridith said.

Over 800 teams from all over the world have submitted applications for the July Junior Olympics competition which takes place in Houston, Texas.

While creative moves and talent aren't a concern for the Glory Girls, Coach Walter McKee told News Leader 9 that the financial hardship of getting to Houston is the biggest challenge. This year, they are turning to the community for help.

"We just would appreciate any support that we could get from the community along the way for this trip," Coach Walter McKee said.

Coach McKee says the competition and sport is good for the girls physically and mentally. Geniquiya says traveling to different competitions gives them the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

"From Singapore to Australia: the competition lasts for four days and we do such events like single rope, and pairs double dutch," Meridith said.

But for the Glory Girls, it is more than just a competition.  Jump rope is their passion, a sport that they love and are proud to be part of.

"Jump rope is not a very well known sport, but to do something so rare and to actually be good at it, it gives us more confidence," Meridith said.
