LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

A former violin teacher from Columbus, who was accused of fondling a student in east Alabama, will not register as a sex offender in Alabama.

Mario Urbina pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of interfering with custody of a child, as part of a plea deal. In exchange, prosecutors agreed not to try him on charges of sexual abuse or enticement.

Urbina was accused of touching a female student while giving a private violin lesson in Auburn. The incident was not reported until May of last year.

Urbina told a judge he was embarrassed and ashamed. He will have 4 years of supervised probation and will be transferred to Georgia.

Urbina played with the Columbus Symphony for 25 years. His attorney hopes he can teach violin to children again, but he will no longer be allowed to teach in Alabama.
