OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

Just a few months ago, we were talking about $4 or maybe $5 a gallon, but now, gas prices have dropped for the 10th week in a row!

According to GasBuddy.com, prices at the pump in Columbus have dipped almost 60 cents since April.

News Leader 9 found some gas stations in East Alabama that are selling gas for under $3.

$2.99 is how much a gallon of regular unleaded gas costs at the Big Cat Fuels gas station in Opelika.

"As soon as I saw it I had to stop to fill up," said Jose Gorriz.

For these drivers, seeing prices hovering around $3 in Opelika is a relief after a roller coaster of a year.

Since December, GasBuddy.com shows that prices in Montgomery and East Alabama steadily rose up to nearly $4 a gallon, but after April, prices have dropped. Now, on average, prices are just around $3.10.

"I have to go to Montgomery a couple of times a week, and it is costing me $30 a roundtrip just to go back and forth just to go to school. For it to come down, you know even saving $10 a trip is tremendous," said driver Thomas Hardegree.

Prices in east Alabama are similar to those in Columbus according to GasBuddy.com.with drivers paying on average just under $3.20 at the pump.

Drivers are not the only ones thankful. So, is Latasha Allen, the manager at Maple Mart gas station in Columbus.

"It brings more people and customers into our store. So, it is really good that gas prices are coming down. A lot of people get to travel and move around and go on vacation," said Allen.

Donna Comer, with Travels by Donna in Columbus, says it is true: more people are hitting the road. In fact, since the drop in gas, she has seen more and more people ready to drive to their destinations.

"We have people who are calling every day. They're trying to get to the beach. They're trying to get to the mountains.  They are out and they are going more and more," said Comer.

Even if these drivers are not planning a trip soon, what matters is saving money anytime they drive.
