COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
Muscogee County Superintendent Susan Andrews decided to leave earlier than originally planned. Andrews announced Wednesday she will leave office as superintendent on June 29th as opposed to July 31st.
After spending 35 years as an educator Andrews told News Leader 9 Wednesday that she accomplished a number of her goals while working in the Muscogee County School District.
"We were able to pass the SPLOST and that was a huge accomplishment because that has provided us with the resources to build Carver, build a new middle school and renovate," said Andrews.
Andrews faced a number of tough issues; including the decrease in standardize testing scores at several low performing schools and the reassignment of Columbus High Principal Marvin Crumbs after he showed a controversial video.
Andrews says it was the school board's decision at the May board meeting to not approve her principal nominations that caused her to step aside early.
"Until those decisions are made we are at a standstill. You have 7 schools out there with no leadership… assistant principals are not on contract right now so you have that void and a lot of work is done in the summer,"Andrews said.
Brewer Elementary, Britt David Elementary, Cusseta Road Elementary Double, Churches Middle, North Columbus Elementary, Richards Middle, and Waddell Elementary all do not have principals assigned for the 2012-2013 school year.
Board Chair Cathy Williams is now looking to the interim superintendent to make recommendations.
"Clearly there is a majority over the board that is not comfortable with her recommendations if we can get an interim in place then maybe they will be more comfortable with the interim's recommendations," said Williams.
Monday, the school board voted to pursue former Muscogee County Schools' Superintendent John Phillips to fill in, while a search continues for a permanent leader.
