Howard named national prep baseball coach of year

COLUMBUS (WTVM) - Columbus Blue Devils baseball coach Bobby Howard has been named National Coach of the Year by ESPNHS.

Howard led the Blue Devils to their third straight GHSA Class AAA state title in 2012, the 12th championship in program history. Howard was head coach for all 12 championship, the first coming in 1984.

Columbus High wound up with a record of 33-4, and earned national runner-up status not only in the final poll from ESPNHS, but from Baseball America as well.

The Blue Devils beat a number of state champions and other highly ranked teams, splitting two games with Class AAAAA champ Parkview, beating AAAAA runner-up Brookwood, and knocking off Florida 6A state runner-up Pace.

They were 2-1 in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational in Cary, NC in April.

This is the second time Howard has earned national honors. In 2004, he was named National Coach of the Year by Baseball America.
