COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
The salary for the interim superintendent of the Muscogee County School District has been decided. During a special meeting Monday, the school board approved a one-year contract for Dr. John Phillips at just a little over $17,000 a month.
It wasn't a unanimous vote to approve the salary. In fact, three board members voted against it, while six were in favor of it. The reason some board members voted against the contract is because it pays Phillips more than the current superintendent.
School board member Rob Varner had this to say moments after the vote. "The issue has been largely around the amount. If you take Dr. Andrews contract, she's paid $170,000 per year. There are some benefits that are added to that with most employees, but the 170 divided by 12 is approximately $14,200 a month. If you take the contract that the board just approved for Dr. Phillips, its $17,000 dollars a month. The difference being that the board approved to gross up."
John Phillips previously served as superintendent from January of 2003 to August 1, 2008, but returned September 1, 2008 to serve as interim. His first day on the job will be July 1st. Copyright 2012 WTVM. All rights reserved.
